Visa Requirement for Türkiye

For EU countries, and citizens of some other European countries may enter without a visa. We strongly advise all participants to check the latest visa regulations for their specific nationality well in advance of their travel dates. How to Visit Ankara?

1. Arriving by Air: Esenboğa Airport (ESB)

Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB) is the international airport and will be your most convenient point of arrival. It handles flights from numerous European cities and major hubs worldwide. We recommend checking direct flight options from your location or considering connecting flights via major European or Turkish cities like Istanbul.

2. Arriving by Rail: High-Speed Train (YHT) to Ankara

You can choose to combine your trip with a visit to Istanbul, world's cultural capital. Then the high-speed train (Yüksek Hızlı Tren - YHT) can offer you a comfortable, efficient, and scenic way to travel from Istanbul to Ankara.

Money: Understanding Turkish Lira (TRY) for Your Visit

As you prepare for your trip, it's helpful to understand the local currency, the Turkish Lira (TRY).

Currency Overview

The official currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira, "₺" or "TRY." Banknotes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Lira.

Exchange Rates and Daily Transactions

It's important to be aware that the exchange rate of the Turkish Lira against major foreign currencies (like EUR, USD, GBP) can fluctuate. We recommend checking the daily exchange rates before making significant transactions. While almost all establishments may accept credit cards, carrying some Turkish Lira for smaller purchases, local markets, and public transport is always advisable.

Payment Methods

• Cash: Cash is widely accepted, especially in smaller shops, local markets, and for tipping.
• Credit/Debit Cards: Major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are generally accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores. However, always have some cash on hand for smaller vendors or emergencies.
• ATMs: ATMs are readily available throughout cities, allowing you to withdraw Turkish Lira using your international debit or credit card. Please be aware of potential foreign transaction fees from your bank.
• Other: Other payment methods such as Apple/Android Pay and other application related methods are not popular. So make sure the have your credit card with you. (QR or NFC payment via credit card is available)
